Showcase of Nova Scotia Fossils and Geology

The Showcase of Nova Scotia Fossils and Geology video series has been developed for grade twelve students, featuring interviews and presentations from international geoscientists who have studied the fossils and geology of the province.

Showcase 1 - Jurassic Fossils with Dr. Neil Shubin

This episode features Dr. Neil Shubin from the University of Chicago, talking about his work in Nova Scotia and subsequent discoveries and research on transitions in the fossil record.  This episode was hosted by Dr. Tim Fedak, Curator of Geology, Nova Scotia Museum, and co-hosted by Luke Allen, a student at Citadel High School in Halifax.

The discovery of a 375-million-year-old fish, Tiktaalik, sheds light on a major transition in the history of life: the movement of vertebrates onto land. Paleontologist and anatomist Neil Shubin describes his team's discovery of that fossil.

Showcase 2 – Triassic Fossils of Nova Scotia with Dr. Hans Sues

This episode features Dr. Hans-Dieter Sues, Senior Curator of Vertebrate Palaeontology at the Smithsonian Institute. Hans talks about the diversity of Triassic vertebrates found in Nova Scotia.  This episode was hosted by Dr. Tim Fedak, Curator of Geology, Nova Scotia Museum, and co-hosted by Luke Allen, a student at Citadel High School in Halifax

Showcase 3 - Fundy Fossils and Planetary Geology with Dr. Paul Olsen

This episode features Dr. Paul Olsen, Professor of Earth and Environmental Science, at Columbia University, New York. Paul talks about his history of discovering fossils and the research of the Bay of Fundy sediments, cycles, and linkages with planetary geology and potential linkages with theories of dark matter. This episode was hosted by Dr. Tim Fedak, Curator of Geology, Nova Scotia Museum, and is co-hosted by Luke Allen, a student at Citadel High School in Halifax.

Showcase 4 - Carboniferous Vertebrate Fossils from Nova Scotia with Dr. Hillary Maddin

This episode features Dr. Hillary Maddin, Assistant Professor at Carleton University. Hillary talks about fossils she has been studiying from the Carboniferous tree stumps of Joggins and Cape Breton, and why these studies are important to understanding the current global biodiversity of living animals. This episode was hosted by Dr. Tim Fedak, Curator of Geology, Nova Scotia Museum, and is co-hosted by Luke Allen, a student at Citadel High School in Halifax.
