Many Haligonians can still recall Edith Clayton at her stall at the weekly city market on Water Street. She sold produce grown by her family and bunches of flowers and evergreen garlands. But the real prizes were her baskets. Like her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Edith Clayton was a gifted basket weaver. Her husband collected the forest maple that she wove into magnificent splintwood baskets. How long would it take you to make a basket like this one? Edith Clayton made hundreds every year. A resident of East Preston, she passed on her skills to her daughters and many others, ensuring the survival of a proud family tradition.
