Pioneering Potter
Long interested in the ceramic arts, Alice Hagen did not turn her own hand to the potter’s wheel until she was 60. But she certainly made up for lost time. Using Nova Scotia clays, Hagen combined the construction and decorative processes to create beautiful pieces like this bowl. Look at the distinctive swirls and colours of her “Scotian Pebble” ware. A pioneer of studio pottery in Nova Scotia, Hagen was also an acclaimed china painter, a passionate teacher and a successful entrepreneur. She continued to make and sell pottery at her Mahone Bay studio into her 90s.
