Bay of Fundy Gems

Agate is common in the basalt flows of the Jurassic Period here in Nova Scotia, which form the spectacular hills around the Bay of Fundy. It is a variegated form of quartz, usually found in concentric bands with a beautiful translucency. It can be made into jewellery but also stands on its own as a beautiful specimen. Agate became the provincial gemstone of Nova Scotia in 1999.
