Explosion in The Narrows: The 1917 Halifax Harbour Explosion reflects upon this history, and shares the diverse stories caused by the unforeseen events of that fateful day, when Halifax’s busy wartime port saw Imo crossing The Narrows in the harbour, and collision with Mont-Blanc’s bow.

Visitors will learn about the naval activities that led to the explosion, the unimaginable scenarios of residents and businesses who were affected in their neighbourhoods, including Halifax’s North End (then known as Richmond) and what is now known as Africville, and on the Dartmouth side of the harbour, such as Tufts Cove.

Melted and twisted pieces of Mont Blanc’s hull are displayed among striking panoramic images of both Halifax and Dartmouth sides of the harbour in the aftermath of the worst human-made disaster since the atomic bomb.
Rescue and relief efforts, stories of first responders and heroes and heroines who persevered, and faced insurmountable odds during and after the explosion, are shared.
