It is with heavy hearts that we announce the temporary closure of the Black Loyalist Heritage Centre today, Monday 29 June, to honor the memory of our beloved colleague, Luke Goodwin.

We will reopen for regular hours (9:30am to 4pm) on Tuesday 30 June. We thank you for your understanding and look forward to welcoming you back then.

Event
Come watch a sculpture come to life and learn how it’s done at this live carving demonstration on July 26 from 12 pm to 4:30 pm. Wood carver Luca Jesse Apel will be working on his latest project while discussing technique, tools, and inspiration. Discussion will also touch on the history of woodcarving and how the discipline has evolved through time.

Artist Bio

Luca Jesse Apel a sculptor, installation artist, and lifelong nomad, creating works inspired by physiology. Rather than imposing predetermined forms, he collaborates with the wood's imperfections: knots, cracks, and termite trails into his designs. This dialogue with the medium is an integral part of his artistic process and draws parallels between wood and the human body in concepts of scarring, resilience, growth, and decay. Just as each piece of salvaged wood tells a story through its grain patterns, knots, and weathering, human tissues, too, reveal narratives of survival, adaptation, and healing.
