After serving the Canadian oceanographic community with distinction for almost sixty years, the CSS/CCGS Hudson was retired in 2022.  During her lengthy seagoing career, Hudson carried out 480 cruises in support of research in ocean engineering, hydrography, geophysics, marine geology, physical oceanography, chemical oceanography, marine ecology, fisheries and marine mammals.  In so doing, she helped establish the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO) as a major oceanographic institution in the international community.  While working in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, she sailed a total of 1,600,000 nautical miles which is equivalent to sailing 74 times around the world.

Donald Gordon is a retired federal scientist who received his PhD in oceanography from Dalhousie in 1968 and, after a two-year sojourn at the University of Hawaii, worked for thirty-five years as a research scientist and manager at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography (BIO).  His research focused on understanding the impacts of human activities on marine ecosystems, including oil spills, tidal power, offshore drilling and fishing.  He is the veteran of many Hudson cruises and is now a BIO emeritus scientist documenting oceanographic history.
