Printing Press

Printing Press: Joseph Howe bough this printing press in the 1820s and used it to publish his newspaper The Novascotian. In his newspaper he printed his editorials that presented his political opinions. One of the most important series of editorials he wrote promoted the need for responsible government for the province. Responsible government means government is responsible to the people, rather than the monarchy. Thanks to Joseph Howe’s work, much of it with this printing press, Nova Scotia became the first British colony to achieve responsible government. (Photograph by Nova Scotia Archives.)
