Abraham Gesner, born in Nova Scotia in 1797, developed a keen interest in chemistry, geology, and natural history while studying medicine in London. Upon returning to the Maritimes, his innovative experiments with “cracking” coal to produce oils and gases led to the creation of “kerosene,” revolutionizing artificial lighting.
Join historian Elizabeth Haigh at the Museum of Industry on September 21, 2024, at 2:00 PM for a presentation on the life and contributions of Abraham Gesner, a trailblazer in the modern petrochemical industry. Elizabeth Haigh, a former professor of the History of Science at St. Mary’s University, retired in 2006.
