Carrying Through: Mi’kmaw Women Educators Shaping Our Past, Present, and Future

March 25, 2025
Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, Halifax

 Tuesday Night Talk

 6:30 pm

Today, Mi’kmaw education is more accessible than ever before, both in schools and for public audiences. Much of the learning that we now take for granted in Nova Scotia (and beyond!) has come about as the result of the tireless advocacy and strength of Mi’kmaw women educators in the 20th century.

These educators, women like Elsie Charles Basque, Sister Dorothy Moore, Phyllis Googoo, Mali-Ellen Googoo, Becky Julian, Patsy-Paul Martin, Lillian Marshall and Murdena Marshall, led (and continue to lead) with their love for their language, culture, and communities, making historic change in our education systems that continues to ripple into the present. This presentation, presented by Mercedes Peters, highlights the stories of these changemakers (and more), the history they made, and the future they’ve shaped.

Mercedes Peters (Glooscap First Nation) is the Sharing Our Stories Coordinator at the Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre. She works closely with the MDCC team on sharing Mi’kmaw worldview, language and history with learners of all ages, as well as educators across Nova Scotia and beyond.
