A Community Effort

Imagine being asked to organize a fundraiser. You want to involve many people. And you want to create something of lasting beauty to mark the event. How would you do this? In Nova Scotia, there is a long tradition of inviting people in the community to come together and make a quilt. This beautiful quilt, made around 1952 by the United Baptist Ladies Aid of Port Greville in Cumberland County, was sold to raise money for their church. Each quilter stitched her name into her block. Like most traditional Nova Scotia quilts, the pattern you see here runs all the way to the edges – wide borders were seldom used.
