A Display of Rank and Status
Hats send a message in any culture. Hats like this one came to be a powerful expression of a Mi’kmaw woman’s standing in her community. Elders tell us that red hats were generally assigned to younger Mi’kmaw women. You can see the variety of materials that went into creating this striking hat – wool fibre, silk, feather, cotton and glass beads. Made in the 1800s, the hat comes from Liverpool, Nova Scotia.
