Donations to the Collection

Do you have an object related to Nova Scotia’s natural, marine, industrial, or cultural history that you think should be part of the Provincial Collection?

The Provincial Collection focuses on objects that represent the natural and cultural history of Nova Scotia. The Nova Scotia Museum regularly receives objects that reflect our province’s heritage through gifts and bequests to its collection.

The Nova Scotia Museum strives to acquire objects that generally are complete and in good condition, for which provenance or locality is known and which are free from conditions. Knowing the significance of an object increases its historical value. Was it made in Nova Scotia? Was it used in Nova Scotia? Is it associated with an event, person, historical period, or geographic area?

The Nova Scotia Museum also must consider an object’s fit within the collection, opportunities for its use in exhibition at any of its sites, research and education, and ensure proper care for the object. We appreciate but cannot accept all offers. If an object is accepted for the Provincial Collection, a signed gift agreement will transfer ownership to the Nova Scotia Museum.

Based on guidelines provided by the Nova Scotia Museum Collection’s Management Policy and the current Canadian tax laws, a donation may be eligible for a tax receipt.

We appreciate your interest in helping preserve Nova Scotia’s cultural & natural heritage. For more information, please refer to the NSM Collection Management Policy or contact:
